Jonathan Wellum, CEO and CIO of AIC Investments.

It is my pleasure to share with you two of our current initiatives:
- Building the absolute best in-house value portfolio management team with a focus on our core strength of financial services; and
- Partnering with some of the world’s leading value managers to provide exclusive global opportunities for Canadian investors.
Superior in-house management
Investing in proven talent and building our in-house team is a top priority. All AIC portfolio managers have one investment philosophy – value investing. We currently have an exceptionally strong team, which we will continue to augment over time with the strongest talent we can hire.
We have also added further rigor to our manager monitoring processes, including more extensive peer reviews and CIO monitoring.
We review all of our portfolios on a weekly basis using some of the following metrics: P/E, P/B, 3-year average returns of equity, dividend yield and FCF yield. In addition, our research team meets on a weekly basis to discuss new investment ideas and current market issues.
Together, these efforts not only ensure that we have one of the country’s premier in-house value management teams, but also that our products are always supported by long-term fundamentals.
Creating partnerships with exceptional value management firms
Partnering with some of the best value managers on the planet is also a critical part of our company strategy – Ariel Investments of Chicago, Third Avenue Management of New York, Loomis, Sayles & Company of Boston and Brookfield Redding of Chicago.
These partners are deep in talent and have storied histories. By working with leading firms, we minimize talent risk and build long-term access to the highest value-added capital we can find – anywhere in the world. The funds managed by them are exclusive to Canada and available only through AIC.
